Organic-based Antiferromagnets

Organic-based materials exhibiting the technologically important property of bulk magnetism have been pioneered in our laboratory and studied in collaboration with many research groups worldwide.  These magnets are prepared via conventional organic synthetic chemistry methodologies, however, unlike classical inorganic-based magnets do not require high-temperature metallurgical processing.  Furthermore, these magnets are frequently soluble in conventional organic solvents.  The cooperative magnetic behavior established for organic-based magnets include: ferromagnets, ferrimagnets, both antiferromagnets and artificial antiferromagnets, weak ferromagnets (= canted antiferromagnets, metamagnets, spin glasses, spin waves/magnons, chiral magnets, and photomagnets that can have critical temperatures (Tc) exceeding room temperature.

                In addition to an overview of magnetic behavior, numerous examples of structurally characterized antiferromagnets made from molecules will be presented. Examples include allyls, nitroxides (including nitronyl nitroxides), [MnIII(OEP][C4(CN)6] (H2OEP = octaethylporphyrin, Mn(CN)2, MnITCNE)[C4(CN)8]1/2 (TCNE = tetracyanoethylene), and (NEt4)MnII3(CN)7.  The distinction between an antiferromagnet and a synthetic/artificial antiferromagnet will be discussed with examples.
